У статті досліджено поняття «політично значуща особа» та «особа зі значною економічною і політичною вагою в публічному житті», їхні спільні та відмінні риси. Встановлено, що обидві категорії спрямовано на запобігання незаконному впливу на державні інституції, однак відрізняються за цілями запровадження та механізмами правового регулювання. З’ясовано, що політично значущі особи підпадають під етичні стандарти та додатковий контроль, тоді як для осіб, які мають значну економічну та політичну вагу в суспільному житті такі механізми обмежено. Наголошено, що ці категорії не є взаємовиключними та застосовуються з урахуванням індивідуальних характеристик особи і конкретних обставин.
